The Blue Sky Boys- The Sunny Side Of Life 5xCD *320kbps (Bear Family, 2003)

"No one in country music has done vocal duets better than the Blue Sky Boys. If your taste runs more to Conway and Loretta, George and Tammy, or Wynonna and Naomi, listen to the effortless, exquisite singing of Bill and Earl Bolick....
Their intricate yet simple harmonies, their perfectly matching voices, and their unadorned mandolin and guitar instrumental backing set them off from the competition, so much so that two generations of subsequent duet singers echo them, some without realizing it. The Everly Brothers and the Louvin Brothers, themselves recognized as exceptional vocal duets, acknowledge the influence of the Blue Sky Boys." (David Vinopal, Allmusic)

Respost- -320kbps upgrade. CD rips by yours truly. I absolutely love The Blue Sky Boys. They are gospel harmony perfected. And this deluxe, near-comprehensive Bear Family collection (or the JSP box) is the way to go. A total must.

Preparation For The Landing

Applehead- Crepaxian Interligne Mixtape (Pre-Cert, 2011)

"*Limited to 90 copies only, packaged in a amazing looking clamshell/cartridge style pack* Following the unresolved 'Applehead De Applehead' LP, Tony DeVal expands the semi-fictitious Applehead mythology on Andy Votel and Demdike Stare's first label cassette. Mixed at Villa Scott using only original European vinyl pressings, the 'Crepaxian Interligne' mixtape nods to the psychedelic eroticism of Guido Crepax's comics and the soundtracks of '80s Spanish and Italian horror films in typically enigmatic and inexplicable fashion. We couldn't tell you the names of any tracks, even if we wanted to (you wouldn't want Applehead on your case either, would you?), but these are the sort of cryptic sounds which conjure images of vulpine murderesses, sharp-suited sleuths, overacting obese gang bosses and the sort of more explicit blueness that would have the Daily Mail belling the BBFC. These are sounds you've probably never heard before, but they'll take you right back to 1984, alone in your bedroom watching badly dubbed and outrageous foreign "muck". Right up our alley, then! Limited copies only - no blinking." (Boomkat)

Tremendous ups to Captain Groovy for dropping this coveted cassette in the comments section of thee Applehead de Applehead post a few weeks back. I'd imagine this is his rip.....If you're feeling the adolescent vhs dragon fantasy déjà vu vibe up in this piece, methinks you should make an effort to drop in and show the captain some love over at therealnittygritty.blogspot.com. Thanks also to Jonny for the pics. And, well, to Pre-Cert of course for their excellent esoteric micro-releases. This here's a cooperative effort. Jah bless.

Applehead- Crepaxian Interligne Mixtape (Pre-Cert, 2011) 320 kbps AAC.

(V/A) Guitar Mood 2: More Rare Instrumentals from the New and Olde Worlds (Repent, 2011)

"A completely unanticipated follow up to the long ago issued wacko eclectic instrumental comp of '60s rock bands from various corners of the world. Amazing examples of local cultures of Turkey, Japan, Finland, Peru, Colombia (and the exotic lands of England and the U.S.) colliding with the guitar instrumental craze, with some longhair music (Beethoven), chicha/cumbia, and half-faux/half-real African influences thrown in. Must be heard to be believed. It's been a long wait since the demise of the much-loved 'Guitar Mood' LP a few years ago, but here's a second volume of obscure but very tasty guitar instrumentals from the 1960s! Japanese surf guitar legend TAKESHI TERAUCHI checks in with two tunes: his rockin' version of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, and the Baja surfin' tune 'Kokkyo No Machi'. Turkish Fender whiz (and snappy dresser) Mesut Aytunca of SILUETLER shows off with two tunes from 1965 and 1966, along with fellow Turks HARAMILER's fried Middle Eastern instro-rocker from 1967. LOS ORIENTALES DE PARAMONGA and MANZANITA Y SU CONJUNTO, both from Peru, contribute two frantic guitar cumbias, while two more Peruvian bands, LOS SIDERALS and LOS BELKINGS, turn up the echo and the fuzz respectively for two surfy instros. Colombia's PEDRO JAIRO GARCES and his band contribute a 3-part Latin medley complete with accordion parts, Britain's VIC FLICK, the guy behind the original 007 guitar sound, drops a rather strange Afro-flavored one, but AFROSOUND is pure Latin with plenty of Cuban-style percussion and some sort of weird rumbling sound effect, though Finland's BLAZERS come in with a very melodic, heavy-echo-drenched surf-style instro. The USA is represented by a 1959 VENTURES-style instro from BILL COLLINS and a goofy number from THE PASTEL SIX. Enjoy!" (standard promo write-up)

2011 bootleg. Some great Turkish and Peruvian tracks, and more. A welcome companion to the original Guitar Mood compilation. 320 vinyl rip by yours truly.

Ghostcapital Guest Mix: Silence In Brooklyn / Silêncio no Brooklin, Vol. 1 (*by Paul B. Collins)

Ghostcapital is pleased to present this finely curated guest-mix of vintage Brazilian grooves from Mr. Paul B Collins, Brooklyn resident, Oregon native, and illustrious member of The Soft Landing & Beirut. I've been feeling this playlist & have kept it on iPod repeat for the last two weeks. (Big apologies that I've been so slow to share it) Many thanks to Paul for this superior selection of breezy Brazilian smoothness just in time for the start of this hot Ianque summer. Dig it!

"It is my belief that Brazilian music has not been reissued to its full potential.

Sure, most of the early Caetano and Os Mutantes, have been made available to the public. Tom Zé just had the vinyl box treatment. Four Men With Beards has given us Jorge Ben's "Força Bruta", and Soul Jazz has put out two fantastic Brazilian Rock compilations. That being said, these releases merely scratch the surface of what I see as one of the greatest moments in recorded musical history... Brazil in the 1960's and 1970's.

Silence in Brooklyn, Vol.1, is a compilation of Brazilian music from the 60's and 70's. The goal of it's release is to expand the listener's knowledge of these wonderful artists.

Listen to these musicians, find their music online, increase demand for vinyl reissues!"

-Paul B. Collins

Gull- 8888 CS A-side (Self-released, 2010)

Nathaniel Rappole, aka Gull, has been steady mystifying RVA and beyond with his masked one-man guitar/drum rhythm spectacle. His live act is truly something to behold, and Nate's been known to take it to the streets with a gusto and relentlessness foiled only by the occasional local police. Gull's first proper release was the Thin King 7" released by Molsook Records in 2010 (*downloadable here), but Nate's put out plenty as a member of Snack Truck and Ultra Dolphins as well. He's also one of the nicest dudes. Check it....

Gull on PBS:

And scope this local news spot. Gull's playing the sidewalk in front of Plan 9 Music (former employer of mine) in Carytown...

So, Nate has lavished me with an unreleased and ethereal home-recorded Gull cassette that is an honor to share. It appears to represent Gull's more contemplative side; subliminal and spooky. Great stuff & quite different from the links above. Says he:

"this recording was made over the course of a couple of days in january 10'. i used only what i had in my room at the time, with the exception of 1 porch item. everything was recorded with a dictaphone (ie small tape recorder) and then transferred as was/is into the digital realm by a good friend." -N.R.

Enjoy.
